Learning Journey Timeline

EDU230 Cultural Diversity in Education  Mesa Community College
  • What is culture and what are some major aspects of culture?
Culture is the beliefs, customs or practices of a certain group of people, whether it be ethnic or social. Some major aspects of culture are things like food, music, clothing, religion, education, language and so on.

  • What is multicultural education?  What are the goals of multicultural education?
Multicultural education is a term used to describe the strategies teachers everywhere are using to ensure that every issue their students face due to rapidly changing demographics is solved, and to ensure that each and every student receive a quality, almost personalized education. The goals of multicultural education is to bridge gaps and give every student the opportunity to reach their full potential. Multicultural education also aims to promote tolerance and equity, boost the self-esteem of non-mainstream students, preserve minority group culture and increase diversified student exposure.
  • How does multicultural education reflect responsive teaching to help meet the academic needs of diverse student populations?

Multicultural education and responsive teaching work together to help meet the academic needs of the diverse student population. Multicultural education shines a light on all the cultural differences that can exist within a classroom and applying these differences in the classroom curriculum generate responsive teaching. when the two are applied in a classroom the students become emotionally engaged in their school work and they succeed.

  • How can multicultural education affect broader social issues that impact our society? (e.g. intercultural communication/relations, prejudice, stereotypes, crime & poverty rates, achievement gaps, etc.)
Multicultural education has a huge potential for affecting broader social issues that impact our society. Since multicultural aims to promote tolerance and equity, students often get to learn about a lot of injustices and social issues. Educating students, while they're young especially, about these sorts of issues definitely creates adults who are more empathetic. In the future, these adults will be brave enough to stand up for what's right and in that way they will affect those broader social issues.

  •  What other significant insight(s) have you gained and how will this insight impact your personal/professional life?

I'm really glad to have taken this class. It's the second class in which the topic of multicultural education was brought up very often. Multicultural education will definitely be something that I would like to apply in my classroom and it's something I'll refer back to a lot as a teacher. I really want my classroom to be a safe space, where empathy and tolerance are promoted above all else, and where every student feels comfortable learning and succeeding.

Poem

Diversity

Colors are as divided as they come, but they are all connected.
Languages are as different as they can be, but they are all for communication.
Love has different expressions, but they are all for making connections.
